President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba, has denied reports claiming that he and other leaders of the body have endorsed the “Grand National Political Coalition, of the National Intervention Movement (NIM)”.

Earlier reports had stated that Wabba and some leaders of NLC as well as the Labour Party (LP), had at a political meeting allegedly endorsed the new political mevement.

A communique which the group chaired by Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) and Dr Abduljalil Tafawa Balewa, son of the Former Prime Minister of Nigeria, issued after it’s recent summit in Abuja, named NLC and LP as among those that have given it their backing.

The group which claimed to have registered over five million members so far, says it plans to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), led by President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2019 polls.

But in his response in a statement entitled, “I was not part of this meeting”, Comrade Wabba said aside being a fabrication, the story was untrue and a misrepresentation of facts.

“Neither Ayuba Wabba, nor the Nigeria Labour Congress nor the Labour Party is part of or affiliated to the National Intervention Movement.

“I have found it necessary to issue an immediate and emphatic rebuttal to the story by an online medium, (name not stated) that I, Ayuba Wabba, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress have endorsed or was part of a meeting that “endorsed the Grand National Coalition (GNC) of the National Intervention Movement, NIM”.

Wabba further argued that the communiqué reportedly signed by “Mr. Naseer Kura, deputy director general of the new political movement”, which the online medium based its report on was misrepresented.

He added, “I would want to state clearly that neither Ayuba Wabba, nor the Nigeria Labour Congress nor the Labour Party is part of or affiliated to the National Intervention Movement.

“There is a clear procedure for affiliating, endorsing or consorting with any social or political group outside the Nigeria Labour Congress. To the best of my knowledge, the issue of affiliating, endorsing or consorting with NIM was not debated in any of our organ meetings or the Labour Party.

“This is without prejudice to the right of any individual or individuals to exercise in their favour, the right of freedom of association as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution”, the statement read.
