​​Birmingham announced as host of 2022 Commonwealth Games

Birmingham, England has been named as host city for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, having been the only bid submitted to the Federation by the September 30th deadline.

The 2022 games have been reported to be the most expensive sports event (worth £750m) to be held in Britain since the London Olympics.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Louis Martin at a press conference in Birmingham City.

And a media release on the federation’s website www.thecgf.com stated: “The foundations for the Games have now been laid, with the official handover to Birmingham set to take place at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony on April 15 next year.”

Birmingham was chosen ahead of Liverpool as Britain’s candidate, and following the announcement, Birmingham mayor, Andy Street described the announcement as a “fantastic Christmas present for our region”.

The event, which is expected to take place from 27 July – 7 August 2022, marks 20 years since the Games were held in England – Manchester 2002.
