3 DRC medics arrested over murder of WHO doctor

The arrest of three Congolese doctors over the murder of a World Health Organisation (WHO), medic has been confirmed by a military prosecutor.

According to Senior military prosecutor Lt Col Jean-Baptiste Kumbu, the suspects were arrested after they were implicated by nabbbed militiamen involved in attacking treatment centres, including Butembo hospital.

Kumbu said that under interrogation, the militia men implicated four doctors in planning the raids, noting that three of the doctors have been docked while one other is at large.

The Senior Military Prosecutor, also noted that the three Congolese doctors will be prosecuted for “terrorism” and “criminal conspiracy”.

The “passionate” medic was “always ready to go where people would need his help most,” the WHO said in a tribute.

Reports say 1,800 people have died from the Ebola virus in the past year with efforts to contain the spread hindered by militia groups and suspicion towards foreign medical assistance.
