AFCON: Egypt win shootout to reach Nations Cup final

Seven-time African Champions Egypt have reached the final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations after beating Burkina Faso 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw on Wednesday.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring twenty minutes into the second half for Egypt when he curled a shot into the top left corner; and seven minutes later, the Burkinabe became the first side to score against Egypt in the ongoing tournament when Aristide Bance volleyed in.

Burkina Faso took an immediate advantage in the shootout, as goalkeeper Herve Koffi saved Abdallah El Said’s spot-kick. But the 20-year old couldn’t convert his own kick when he stepped up to take his side’s fourth penalty as El Hadary – who is the oldest Nations Cup player in history – also saved Bertrand Traore’s effort to send Burkina Faso home.

Wednesday’s victory means Egypt have now won their last six semi-final appearances, and have equaled Ghana’s record of playing in eight finals.

The other semi-final match will be played on Thursday between Ghana and Cameroon, and the winner of the tie would play Egypt in the final showdown of the championship on Sunday.
