Alex Iwobi scores in 50th appearance for Arsenal

The reigning African Youth Player of the Year, Alex Iwobi, marked his 50th appearance in Premier League side Arsenal FC with a goal in their 2-1 defeat to Watford on Tuesday night.

The Gunners endured their worst first half at home in recent times after conceding two goals; first from Younes Kaboul in 10 minutes with a shot from outside the area which deflected off Aaron Ramsey, and just about three minutes later, Troy Deeney doubled the visitors’ lead. But the hosts improved significantly in the second half and the Nigeria international Iwobi scored in the 58th minute.

Reacting after the game for Arsenal, Iwobi tweeted:

“Disappointing Result, Gotta Pick Our Heads Up & Go Again … Happy To Have Marked My 50th Appearance For @Arsenal With A Goal #AFC #BIG17.”

Arsenal through their Twitter handle had earlier on Tuesday sent a congratulatory message to the Nigerian forward before the Premier League tie against Watford. They celebrated the 20-year-old with a caption, “#Big17” along with a picture of the Super Eagles star.

Iwobi joined Arsenal in 2004 and made his first-team debut for the club in 2016, starting in a 3-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the round-of-16 of the League Cup, and made his Premier League debut four days later when he came from the bench to replace Mesut Özil in a match against Swansea City that ended 3-0 in Arsenal’s favour.

Iwobi has now made 19 appearances in the league this season, scoring three goals.
