Worries as youths abuse other substances after ban on Tramadol

The Federal Government’s fight against illicit drugs continues after four tonnes of Tramadol were impounded at the Muritala International Airport in Lagos.

According to eagle eyed officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NAFDAC) the drugs which were imported from India was recovered at the shed of one of the ground handling companies at the airport.

This is coming a few weeks after the ministry of health recently placed a ban on the importation of codein containing syrups into the country.

Reacting to the development, Ahmadu Garba, the MMIA Commandant of the NDLEA, said the importer of the drugs which were imported in two batches is yet to be traced.

“The seized consignments were imported into the country through the United Arab Emirates’s airline, Etihad Cargo,” he said.

Garba also revealed that they got wind of the drug importation from its foreign intelligent partner which notified it of its arrival in Nigeria.

He said, “The approved milligrams for Tramadol by the Federal Government is 50 milligrams and 100m, but the seized consignments were 250m, which indicated that the importer intentionally imported the high milligrams for wrong use.

“The first batch of the two consignments arrived Nigeria on April 23, 2018, while the second consignment arrived on April 25 at the airport. The two consignments arrived in four waybills while the fifth waybill arrived at the command on Wednesday.”
