Buhari lauds el-Rufai’s move to sack 22,000 teachers amidst protest by Labour, others

Amidst protest by labour unions and some Nigerians, President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday gave his nod to moves by Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State to sack 21,780 teachers in the state.

The teachers reportedly failed the competency test conducted by the state government recently.

The announcement by the governor to sack the teachers has witnessed strong opposition by labour unions both in the state and aside as well as many other Nigerians.

But Buhari gave his support for the governor while reacting on the vexed issue at a special retreat of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on the challenges the Education sector in Nigeria currently faces.

Speaking at the event themed, “Education in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects,” the President said that a situation in which teachers fail to be better than their students is unacceptable.
