CAF Champions League: MFM not scared of opponents -Coach

Fidelis Ilechukwu, head coach of MFM FC, says his team has the quality to face their drawn opponents in the preliminary and first rounds of the CAF Champions League.

The Nigeria Professional Football League side who finished second last season are competing at the continetal level for the first time, and will be up against Real Bamako of Mali in the preliminary round.

Should they scale through the Malian side, the Olukoya boys will then face either Algerian club MC Alger or AC Atoho of Congo in the first round.

But in spite of the huge task before his team, the young coach is confident that his team can face their opponents head on and possibly surprise everyone the same way they did in the dometic league.

Speaking to Complete Sports a day after the draw, Ilechukwu said: “You don’t play football on the pages of newspapers.”

“Nobody gave us the chance to do what we did in the league last season and we will carry that same spirit into the Champions League.

“Our opponents are more experienced than us having played on the continent for a number of years, but we are not concerned about that.

“What is important is also having the determination to play and beat them. We have quality too and I see no reason why we should be afraid of them.”

MFM FC are currently participating in the NPFL Invitational along with five other teams, and will travel to face Bamako on February 9 before hosting the return fixture on February 18.
