CARABAO CUP: Man City beat Chelsea on penalties to successfully defend title

Champions Manchester City successfully defended their League Cup title by beating Chelsea in the final at Wembley on Sunday.

The match was goalless in regulation time, stayed goalless in extra time and went into penalty shootout.

There were scenes involving Chelsea goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, as the game approached the shootouts.

The goalie refused to be subbed off despite plea from manager Maurizio Sarri and his assistants.

But Kepa was able to save Leroy Sane’s kick to give Chelsea hope after Jorginho had missed the opener for the Blues, but David Luiz missed again to put City again on advantage.

The Pep Guardiola side went on to win the penalties 4-3, with Raheem Sterling scoring the winning goal from the spot.

“Of course I’m happy,” Guardiola said after the game.

“Compliments to Chelsea, they played an incredible performance.

“I’m happy to win back to back in this competition for the first time in the club’s history.

“The important thing when it comes to penalties is personality and we did it.”

On his part, Sarri says the Kepa substitution confusion was “a big misunderstanding” because he thought the player had cramp.

However he says Kepa was right that he could continue although the way he went about it was wrong.

Chelsea were also knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United last week, and they currently stand 6th on the Premier League table.

They are however in the race for the Europa League title this season, playing Dynamo Kiev in the round of 16.
