Cerebrospinal Meningitis breaks-out in Niger state, kills 4

The Niger State Commissioner for Health, Dr Mustaph Jibril, has confirmed that no less than four people have passed on following an outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis (Serotype C) in the state.

Dr Jibrin who made the revelation in Minna while briefing journalists, said 31 cases were reported out of which there had been nine confirmed cases and four deaths recorded in the Magama Local Government Area.

He said Magama council had 27 cases while the Katcha Local Government Area had four cases, adding that the samples collected tested positive for Serotype C.

The commissioner added that swift measures have been taken to ensure that the epidemic was timely contained as the outbreak had been restricted to the two local government areas.

“The State Emergency Operation Centre has been fully activated to ensure real time tracking and response to outbreak across the 25 local government areas. Surveillance has also been intensified, including active case search across all the wards in the local government areas.”

According to reports, a total of 209 suspected cases with 22 laboratory confirmed cases and 11 deaths have so far been recorded nationwide.
