Chinese firms grab Nigeria’s $949m pipeline contract

Nigeria through the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has awarded a pipeline contract to a consortium of Chinese companies led by China National Petroleum Corporation Engineering Co., Ltd.

The contract worth $949 million is for the construction of a 40-inch pipeline 221 km long, with two stations and seven valve room and its ancillary facilities.

A statement put out by the company said the pipeline will run through Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) as part of the “Natural Gas Pipeline Project Kaduna-Kano Section General Contract”.

Other companies involved in the project are the China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau Engineering Co., Ltd. and Brentex Petroleum Services Limited (Brentex).

The contract is thought to be in furtherance to Nigeria opening more business flanks in the Asian continent.

To that effect, China Petroleum Engineering (CPE), a member of a consortium of firms in is working with Nigerian authorities to put some finishing touches on the terms of agreement that will see CPE take the project, described by experts in the oil and gas as one of the biggest project after the ones handled by Shell in Nigeria.

Though details of the contract are still sketchy, it will take off before the end of 2017.

But a source from the Petroleum Resources Ministry, said all the needed inputs from both countries have been received.

“The details of the contract will soon be made public, as Nigeria unfolds development in the gas project, which will see the country have enough gas supply for domestic use and export“, the official who pleaded for anonymity said.
