CORONAVIRUS: NCDC reveals how 3rd case was discovered in Lagos

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has revealed how they found the third person suspected to have contracted the deadly coronavirus also known as COVID-19 case in Lagos.

The NCDC admitted in a series of posts on Twitter on Tuesday that a user on the social media platform reached out to them with complaints about his friend who was showing symptoms of the virus.

Within 12 hours of communication, the agency in the series of tweets informed that they collected a sample and afterwards the result from the tests revealed that the patient (female) tested positive for the virus.

“On the 15/03, NCDC directly contacted a Twitter user who mentioned his friend who returned from UK had runny nose but could not reach authorities for testing.

“Within 12 hours of communication with us via DM, a sample was collected.

“We’re committed to doing our best,” they wrote.

The patient’s identity is given as a 30-year-Nigerian lady and her case is “independent of the index case”.

This comes after the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said on Tuesday the state government has started intensive contact tracing for the passengers that travelled with the third confirmed case of coronavirus on British Airways.

Abayomi, who stated this at a media briefing in Lagos, said the third coronavirus case came on a BA75 flight that arrived in Lagos on March 13.

He said the third case lives with her parents and one sibling, saying the entire family had been transferred to the infectious diseases Hospital at Yaba as a preventive measure and monitoring.
