Court sentences man to death for shooting, robbing stepsister, stepmother

A suspect named Akeem Lawal was sentenced to death by hanging by a Lagos High Court in Igbosere on Monday for shooting and robbing his stepmother, Taibat Lawal, and stepsister, Sherifat Olanipekun.

According to the prosecution, Akeem and two of his gang members, who were masked demolished the front door to his stepsister’s room, with an axe before robbing and shooting her and her 90-year-old mother.

Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, on Monday, found Akeem guilty on two counts of conspiracy to rob and armed robbery.

“I find you (Lawal) guilty as charged on count one of conspiracy to rob and on count two of armed robbery as charged in the amended charge.

“May the Lord God have mercy on your soul.”

The counsel to the convict, E. B. Obogwu, had pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, noting that he had a son, who depended on him before the judgement was pronounced.
