Danger signs as APC releases full list of approved mode of primaries for states

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has released a full list of approved mode of primaries for its various state chapters.

From the published list, some clear danger signs appear as the party may have succumbed to pressure from some governors and other power brokers to approve their preferred primary mode that would effectively ward off challenge against their interests.

In a state like Kaduna where Governor Nasir El-Rufai is seeking to prevent the return to senate of Shehu Sani, with whom he has been engaged in a bitter tussle, his preferred choice of indirect primary was approved.  Sani had pushed for direct primary to stand a fighting chance against El-Rufai’s Chief of Staff, Uba Sani.

In Adamawa, Governor Bindow Jibrilla, in a bid to frustrate threats to his reelection emanating from major challengers like EFCC chairman, Nuhu Ribadu, had requested indirect primaries with the backing of the state party leadership. His request was approved.

In Lagos where APC national leader, Bola Tinubu is reportedly trying to scuttle the reelection bid of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, his preferred choice of direct primary was approved, preparing the grounds for Jide Sanwo-Olu, already endorsed by Tinubu’s Mandate Group, to emerge.
