DANGOTE CEMENT: A Trail of broken promises

Obajana, a once sleepy town in Kogi state, is home to Africa’s largest cement company, Dangote Cement.

Buried in its rusty underbelly are some of the largest deposits of raw materials required for cement production.

Obajana was a beautiful bride waiting to be devoured, and Alhaji Aliko Dangote wasted no time in leading a flock of investors to harness its beauty.

At birth, there had been promises of a life-changing experience for the mostly agrarian dwellers.

However, many years after, the people of Obajana are feeling economically raped, with little to show for the coming of the monstrous Dangote Cement.

In a two-part serial titled, ‘A trail of broken promises; The story of Dangote Cement and the people of Obajana,’ Ripples Nigeria’s Femi Owolabi who was in the dusty town of Obajana gives troubling details on the plight of residents who are daily exposed to cement dust emitting from the cement plant, even as their water is polluted.

The publication, which is a must read, begins Monday, March 13 and ends Tuesday, March 14. Watch out!
