Despite opposition, Catalonia moves to declare independence on Monday

In a move regarded as a rupture that threatens the foundations of Spain‘s young democracy, Catalonia will move on Monday to declare independence after holding a banned referendum.

According to Mireia Boya, a Catalan lawmaker from the pro-independence Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) party, Monday’s declaration of independence would be followed by a parliamentary session to evaluate the results of the Oct. 1 vote to break away.

“We know that there may be disbarments, arrests … But we are prepared, and in no case will it be stopped,” she said on Twitter.

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont said he favoured mediation to find a way out of the crisis but that Spain’s central government had rejected this. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s government responded by calling on Catalonia to “return to the path of law” first before any negotiations.

Catalonian’s celebrated the landmark outcome of votes to split from Spain with its government with 2.26 million people casting ballots. 90% voting to gain independence in polls marred by violence.

Voters defied a violent police crackdown and voted 90 percent in favour of breaking away after Catalonia’s regional leader Puigdemont’s opened the door to a unilateral declaration of independence from Spain.
