Egypt detains 4 in connection with murdered Italian student
Four suspects believed to be relatives and the head of an alleged criminal gang have been arrested by Egyptian authorities in connection with the murder of an Italian student.
Egyptian prosecutors said police found belongings of murdered Italian student Giulio Regeni, with the alleged criminal gang.
Police said they found Regeni’s possessions at a house belonging to the sister of one of the gang members.
The gang leader’s wife, brother, sister, and brother-in-law were held, accused of concealing a criminal and hiding stolen goods, the judicial sources said on Saturday.
According to Egyptian police, the group specialised in impersonating police and kidnapping foreigners, and had Regeni’s bag and passport in their possession.
Recall that the dead and broken body of the 28-year-old Cambridge University student, who was researching independent labour unions, was found at the side of a motorway on the outskirts of Cairo in February.
