Ekiti Assembly fulfills threat, orders IGP to arrest Fayemi

The Ekiti State House of Assembly has asked the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to immediately arrest the former governor of the state and present Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The lawmakers urged the police boss to ensure the former governor is brought to the Assembly to answer allegations of fraud levelled against him.

The Assembly’s warrant of arrest issued against Fayemi was sequel to the failure of the former governor to honour an invitation to answer allegations bothering on fraud and misappropriation of funds while in office.

The Assembly stated at a press conference on Tuesday addressed by the chairman, House Committee on Information, Dr. Samuel Omotosho, in Ado Ekiti, that It has directed the Inspector General of Police, through the Ekiti State commissioner of police, to urgently ensure that the former governor is brought before the Assembly to answer for fraud allegations made against him.

Quoting Section 129(1) of the Nigerian Constitution as the basis for the warrant, Omotosho wondered how Fayemi would refuse to appear before the House after he had been invited three times by the Assembly.

He said, “These allegations include financial mismanagement, misapplication and misappropriation of funds, diversion of LG funds, contract splitting and criminal mismanagement of the UBEC counterpart fund described as a serious financial crime by Dr. Dikko Suleiman, the executive secretary of UBEC, which has made UBEC to blacklist Ekiti State since 2013 under Section 9 (B) of the UBEC Act 2004, with serious collateral damage on the education sector, the pupils, teachers, parents and local contractors.”

The Assembly is also accusing the EFCC of neglecting its petitions to investigate Fayemi.

The Assembly had, following a report received from the executive on February 2, 2016 on allegations of fraud Fayemi allegedly committed during his tenure, invited him to come and clear himself.

He had, however, refused to honour any of the Assembly’s three summons.

The IG should go ahead to enforce the warrant. Dr. Fayemi is not above the law.
