FA CUP: Sanchez nets extra-time winner as Arsenal set up Chelsea final

Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez scored the decisive goal in extra-time as Arsenal beat Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday to reach a third FA Cup final in four seasons.

City went ahead when Sergio Aguero raced through to clip in the opener on the hour mark, before Nacho Monreal volleyed in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross to equalise 10 minutes later.

Though Yaya Toure hit the post and Fernandinho the bar for City but the tie remained without a winner until full time, and consequently went into extra time.

But Arsenal took the lead in the 101st minute after Sanchez taps in from close range. The Gunners kept the ball alive in the box after a corner and Welbeck’s effort was diverted into the area of Sanchez, who swept home to give his side the lead.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger speaking in a post-match interview, said he is very proud of his side’s performance, as he also praised Sanchez for his impressive display.

“I am very pleased, it was a big game today. Overall it was a great performance not only technically but mentally. We became stronger and in the end deserved to win the game.

“The team performance was there. When the players give their best and are completely focused you always stand up for them.

“Alexis Sanchez was like the team. He had problems to start and became stronger and stronger. He is an animal, always ready to kill the opponent.

“He will be here next year because he has a contract and hopefully we will manage to extend him,” he revealed.

The Frenchman who has had some trying times this season, is yet to talk about his future with the club. But midfielder Aaron Ramsey told reporters after the win that the team are hoping to lift the FA Cup trophy for the embattled boss.

“We have let him [Arsene Wenger] down at times this season, we want to win it for him and ourselves,” Ramsey said.

Ultimately, in their quest for a title this season, Arsenal will face Chelsea, who thumped Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 in Saturday’s semi-final clash, in the final at Wembley Stadium on 27 May.
