Federer clears air on his retirement, signs new 3-yr deal

Amid speculations that Roger Federer will retire after his Australian Open triumph earlier this year, the tennis great has committed himself to the sport for at least three more years, as he signs a new deal with the Swiss Indoors Basel until 2019.

Recall that Federer, while receiving his trophy at Melbourne Park last month, had said, “I hope to see you next year, but if not, then it was a wonderful year here,” – a statement that triggered the speculations of his retirement from the game.

But the world No. 9 has signed a deal with the Switzerland tournament that will see him play at the event, which he has won on seven occasions, for the next three years.

“I cannot wait to go back to my home in the autumn,” Federer said said on the official Swiss Tennis website. “Playing in Basel is always a highlight of the year.”
