Finally, Benin announces death of Oba Erediauwa

The Prime Minister and Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe has announced the passing away of The Oba of Benin, Omo n’Oba Erediauwa Akpolokpolo I.

Chief Igbe, in company of other traditional Chiefs, broke a white chalk in the palace to signify the death of the monarch.

Oba Erediauwa is rumoured to have died sometime last year, but there was a respectful silence around his state of health, and he has not been seen in public since then.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole, also confirmed the Oba’s death, describing it as a “huge loss”.

He said, “Our hearts are heavy, laden with pains and grief, at the announcement of the passing on to glory of Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa of Benin, our highly revered Oba, a distinguished Edo numero uno, an accomplished Nigerian, a seasoned bureaucrat, quintessential unifier, unique personage and exemplary Omo N’Oba, whose reign brought distinction, immense class, finesse and integrity to traditional institution in Edo state and the country at large.”
