Five inmates of Ikoyi Correctional Centre electrocuted

An unspecified number of inmates at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, Lagos, were on Monday electrocuted.

Although the number of inmates affected had not been ascertained, five inmates reportedly died in the incident, while 10 others sustained injuries.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has ordered a probe of the incident.

In a statement issued by his Press Secretary, ‪Jane Osuji, the minister said update on the incident would be shared “in a few hours.”

The statement read: “The attention of the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has been drawn to an electrocution incident at the Ikoyi Medium Security Prison in Lagos.

“The minister has directed a quick investigation into the root cause and the ministry will in the next few hours share a comprehensive update on the incidence.

“While we commiserate with the victims of the incidence, the minister has ordered immediate medical attention for those affected.”
