We fought until the end - Barca boss Enrique

After losing the La Liga title to rivals Real Madrid on the final day of the season, Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has blamed his side’s inconsistency during the course of the season for their woes, but noted they fought relentlessly.

Barcelona failed to retain the title they’ve held for past years despite beating SD Eibar in the final day game with a remarkable second-half turnaround on Sunday.

Eibar went 2-0 up through two stunning Takashi Inui strikes, before David Junca’s own goal, Luis Suarez’s finish and two goals from Lionel Messi, who also missed a penalty, handed Barca the 4-20 win.

But it was Real Madrid’s title to lose. The Zinedine Zidane’s men beat Malaga 2-0 to win their first Spanish League title since 2012.

“We fought until the end,” Enrique, who will be leaving the club this season, said.

“The team did many things well this season, but the line that separates triumph from defeat is very small as we have seen.”

Barca suffered shock defeats at Celta Vigo, Deportivo la Coruna and Malaga, as well as at home to Alaves earlier in the campaign, which caused the damage to their title chase.

Enrique added: “We let games get away that we haven’t in other years. At the end of the day we’ve paid the price.”

“Hopefully, we can continue to win titles but there are rivals that want the same thing and are at our level.”

“We congratulate the champions and now think about the other title that we can still win.”

Barca will face Alaves in the Copa Del Rey final on May 27, as they hope to life their only trophy of the season.
