Ghanaian legend Kuffour calls for sack of Coach Grant after AFCON defeat

Ex-Ghana star Samuel Osei Kuffour wants Ghana coach Avram Grant sacked as national team coach after his side suffered defeat to Cameroon in their semi-final clash at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon thrashed the Black Stars’ hopes of ending their trophy drought with a 2-0 win to set up a final showdown with seven-time champions Egypt on Sunday.

Cameroon scored two late goals to advance into the final; but 40-year-0ld Kuffour, working as a pundit on SuperSport, blamed Grant as the chief cause of the team’s failure to progress in this year’s edition of the biennial competition in Gabon.

”I’m pissed. [Avram] Grant must go. He spends all his time outside the country and does not develop any local talent. Ghana football is in crises and I’m worried about the youth,” Kuffour remonstrated after the final whistle.

The former Chelsea manager, who has been coaching the Black Stars since 2014, searched for the equaliser when his side were a goal down from the 72nd minute, and as a result, left space at the back, which was exploited in the third minute of stoppage time when Cameroon netted-in the second goal that gave them a comfortable win.

“I am more than unhappy. We wanted so much to be in the final,” Grant said after his side’s defeat on Thursday night.

“We did everything to be there and in the second half we completely dominated. Congratulations to Cameroon of course but we were the better side and we lost.”

As a consolation, however, Ghana will hope to go home with the bronze medal as they are set to face Burkina Faso in the third-place match at Port Gentil on Saturday.

“We will prepare for this game. We have to play this game so we will do everything to play this game even though it wasn’t the game we were wishing for,” the distraught Grant said in a post-match interview.
