Gov Shettima, security chiefs strategise to curtail stubborn Boko Haram

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima and heads of the Nigerian Army, Air Force, Police and the Department of State Security (DSS) met at the weekend to suggest means and better ways to curtail the activities of Boko Haram who are yet to stop attacks despite the heavy losses it has continued to suffer.

Nigerian Army has sacked the group from its Sambisa Forest base and even pronounced the group defeated. But the recalcitrant group have continued to carry out suicidal attacks.

It was based on this that the governor and the security chiefs met in an emergency security meeting with the aim of stepping up measures on increased surveillance to forestall further attacks by the insurgents.

The governor was said to have before the meeting with security chiefs, held a three-hour closed-door meeting with the Theater Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Leo Irabor at the governor’s office in Maiduguri.

It was learnt that Irabor had during the meeting, briefed the governor over recent attacks and ongoing military operations in the state. He also told him that the remnants of the insurgents were only suicidal missions following their displacement from Sambisa forest.

Details of the governor’s meeting with security chiefs was disclosed in a statement by Shettima’s Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy, Malam Isa Gusau, on Sunday.

He said at the end of the meeting, new guard locations were set up in some routes across the state to restrict the movement of remnants of Boko Haram fighters.

It also said that security personnel deployed to various locations in the state were increased with more members of Civilian JTF involved and that the governor also sanctioned the release of additional patrol vehicles to security agencies for increased surveillance.

The statement further disclosed that during the meeting synergy between armed forces and volunteers were reviewed with measures adopted to increase collaboration and clamp down on cattle rustling used by insurgents to raise funds.

The council also reflected on recent false information spread by mischief makers to cause disaffection between armed forces and volunteers particularly the Civilian JTF and warned mischief makers against indulging in acts capable of undermining the emerging peace across the state.

Governor Shettima was said to have also during the meeting, approved logistics to compliment efforts of the Federal Government in strengthening armed forces.

In attendance at the meeting were General Officer Commanding, 7 Division of the Army, Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu; the Commander, 79 Composite group of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Charles Oho; the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Damian Chukwu; the Garrison Commander, 7 Division of the Army, Brigadier General Jibrin Mohammed among others.
