Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, on Monday disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari is sending a delegation of some governors to the Southeast and South-South regions of the country.

He said the delegation is being sent as part of Buhari’s effort to douse tension in the region, adding that the visit also targets to promote peace and dialogue among all sections of the country.

This was contained in a statement the Sokoto State governor released through his media spokesman Imam Imam.
Included as members of the delegation as disclosed by the statement are the chairman of Northern Governors Forum and Borno State governor, Alhaji Kashim Shattima, Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi and Hon Simon Lalong of Plateau States.

“The delegation will hold meetings with their counterparts in Rivers, Abia and Imo states. Apart from the visit to political leaderships in those states, the delegation is expected to meet with traditional and religious leaders. They will also confer with northerners resident in those states.

“Importantly, the delegation will reassure their counterparts in the South-South and Southeast that all Nigerians are free to stay in all parts of the country, especially in the North, and that the entire North stands with the people of South East in this period of heightened tension.

“The visit has the blessing of President Muhammadu Buhari and the consultations will continue with all stakeholders so as to enhance unity and peace in the federation,” the statement read.

The development is coming despite the continued exercise of the Nigerian Army’s “Operation Python Dance” in the Southeast after the region’s apex body and other leaders called for the withdrawal of the soldiers over its alleged human rights abuses as a result of its clash with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Abia State.
