GUN CONTROL: Trump wants 'to have it both ways', Democratic senator says

The ongoing gun control debate in the United States of America may take a confrontational turn after Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut accused President Donald Trump of trying ‘to have it both ways’.

Senator Murphy who further said Trump is also trying “to bob and weave” on the issue also added that the Republicans figure they are going to struggle in the polls in 2018 and 2020 if they don’t support background checks.

“I think he knows that the mood of the country has shifted such that he and his party are going to pay a huge price in the polls in 2018 and 2020 if they don’t start supporting things like universal background checks” for gun purchases, Murphy said. “At the same time, the NRA was one of his earliest supporters … And so he’s trying to keep them happy as well.”

Last week, plans by Trump and other Republicans to change U.S. gun laws after the deadly school shooting in Florida that killed 17 students and staff was kicked against by the National Rifle Association.

The group is not in support of moves to raise the age limit for buying certain types of guns and the proposed banning of bump stocks that enable semi-automatic rifles to shoot hundreds of rounds a minute.

The gun control debate took on a new urgency following the Florida school attack carried out by a 19-year-old assailant.
