EFCC: $43m and the continuous tomfoolery

When the first rejection was announced, I had sent in a commentary and now I have been further vindicated. We put whoever is the Chairman of EFCC in a quandary with this childish confirmation becuase you expose the person to the same people he is persecuting if he was to take the corruption battle seriously.

How do we expect the Senate to clear a professed enemy so that he can continue to persecute them. The leaders of the Senate are all in different phases of investigation, with this the conclusion would be very obvious.

The curious twist with the DSS position is one that beats my imagination. I cannot seem to unravel the whole scenario. Why would another arm of government who will need each other in the pursuit of their goal be standing against the confirmation of the head of a strategic division. I really do not want to say much about this but my point is even if the DSS angle was not part of the equation, we would still find ourselves in a quagmire.

The solution like I earlier mentioned is to throw the position up as an elective office open to all Nigerians with relevant experience and character to vie for. This would remove the need to be confirmed by possible ‘persons of attention’ by a hardworking anti-corruption czar would be removed.

Let Nigerians vote for the Chairmanship of EFCC and let that person be answerable to the Nigerian people like the President and kept in check by the courts and the judiciary. The EFCC is today a very sensitive and very important institution if we are going to seriously tackle our nemesis which is corruption. It’s independence and corporate sanctity must be guaranteed, it must not be subjected to the kind of humiliation we are presently witnessing, it must not be under the control of anybody but the Nigerian people and it’s chairmanship must not be thrown up by any political party or power bloc.

To me, this is the only solution that I can see on this matter, otherwise we would be going round in circles if we remain determined to get an astute and uncompromising leadership for the EFCC.

With what is going on, only a feeble and an amenable candidate will pass this test. The present leadership has shown in its continued state that it would be unrelenting and uncompromising in its pursuit and as such would find it very difficult to pass through the eye of the needle which is the Senate confirmation process.

But you see the kind of Assembly we have assembled. Other people have been asked to bow down or sing the national pledge and go but in this case it’s a road block. Why can’t Magu be asked to recite the pledge and go home. The answer is so obvious that I will not waste my time on reeling out the answer.

Let’s reform this process. Let’s democratize it and let the people decide.
