Ighalo signs new five-year contract with Watford

Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has agreed a five-year contract extension at Watford.

Ighalo had been a target for West Brom, who are keen to bring in a new striker before allowing Saido Berahino to leave the club.

The Baggies had previously tried to sign West Ham’s Diafra Sakho, but he failed a medical and the deal fell through, prompting them to consider Ighalo as an alternative.

Earlier in the summer, Watford rejected a £37.5m bid from Shanghai SIPG for the 27-year-old and he has now committed his long-term future to the Hornets.

Ighalo’s previous deal with Watford was not due to expire until 2020 but the club offered him improved terms to ward off interest from other teams. His new contract runs until 2021.

The Nigerian forward was one of Watford’s key players last season as he scored 15 Premier League goals and struck up a highly-productive partnership with club captain Troy Deeney, who also signed a new five-year deal last month.
