INEC begins strategizing ahead 2019

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it is re-strategizing to ensure the electoral process is strengthened based on policies that will bring about fairness, transparency, credibility and impartiality.

The Commission’s chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who stated this on Monday at the opening of a two-day strategic workshop to review the implementation of the commission’s strategic plan for 2012-2016, added that INEC is ready to put in place a functional electoral system before 2019 general elections.

He said, “The objective of this workshop is to retrospect and project in two days, and come up with better ideas and solutions. We need to re-strategise for the 2019 general elections and beyond to come up with practical solutions on how to strengthen the electoral process.

“This we will do based on the policies of fairness, transparency, credibility and impartiality.”

Emphasising on the commission’s need to work according to its constitutional and legally-defined responsibilities, Yakubu added that the commission must properly examine the standard principle, processes and regulations for election management in the country.

Speaking on INEC officials who committed electoral offenses in recent election in Nigeria, he said that over 102 were arrested by the police during the Edo and Ondo governorship polls, as well as the Rivers State re-run election.

According to Yakubu, 62 of the arrested INEC officials had been prosecuted and sentenced.

He assured that all those who engaged in such unprofessional conduct will not go unpunished.
