INEC hints on commencement of continuous voters’ registration from April

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, said commencement of continuous voters’ registration (CVR) will begin by April 2017, till an undisclosed date.

The exercise is to take place at the commission’s 774 offices nationwide up to 2019.

He stated this in Abuja on Thursday during an event organised by the Civil Society and Situation Room in relation to 2019 general elections

According to Yakubu, 7.8million permanent voters cards (PVC) were still uncollected across the country.

Lagos State is cited as the state with the highest number of PVCs with one million, followed by Edo State which has 700, 000 PVCs yet to be collected.

Ogun State has the least of uncollected PVCs.

Yakubu maintained that the electoral body would never spare anyone that violated the electoral process, adding that electoral violence is now common at the final collation centres.

“So far, we have issued 202 queries to the staff mentioned in the interim EFCC report covering election in 16 states but we have finished work on 14 of the 16 states; whatever action we need to take will be taken.

“We will ensure that there is no more violation of the electoral act and we will spare no one who is perpetuating it,” he said.

He further said that INEC had organised 167 elections since the last general elections and out of the number, that 17 were by-elections.

He assured that INEC is making preparation for the next election in a manner that will ensure that people can vote and go to work.

INEC, since the coming of Yakubu, has had myriads of criticisms arising from inconclusive polls, increasing and assorted kinds of electoral frauds like buying of electoral votes at the polls and alleged fictitious figures by electoral officers among others.
