After Ndume, Buhari meets Saraki over Magu, Ndume

The Senate on Tuesday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to call his security chiefs to order and operate within the ambit of the law.

They said Nigeria was not under military rule and that the constitution must be followed.

They were reacting to the recent invasion of some judges residences by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The DSS invaded private homes of judges of the Federal High Court, as well as Justices of the Supreme Court.

The Senate however, moved against plans to summon the Director-General of the nation’s secret police, Lawal Daura.

The Senate did condemn in strong terms, the invasion by DSS, maintaining that the secret police lacked the powers to arrest judges, despite the existence of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

Senator Joshua Lidani from Gombe state, moved the motion, soon after the Senate ended its 30- minute executive session. In the motion which came under ‘matters‎ of national importance’, the lawmaker called on his colleagues to condemn the action of the DSS.

His motion was supported by other lawmakers who spoke on the issue. Dino Melaye from Kogi state, Godswill Akpabio from Akwa Ibom, Bala Na’Allah from Kebbi state, Chukwuka Utazi from Enugu state and Suleiman Hunkuyi spoke collectively against the invasion.

The Senate resolved after a 45-minute debate that its committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters should investigate the incidence and report to the chamber within four weeks.
