AfDB board resolves to engage neutral investigator for Adesina’s probe

Akinwunmi Adesina was on Thursday re-elected as the President of the African Development Bank for another five-year tenure.

Mr Adesina was elected for the second term as the AfDB head by the Board of Directors of the multilateral lender at the ongoing AfDB’s virtual annual meeting in the Ivorian city.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Personal Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, confirmed the development while congratulating Adesina via her Twitter handle, @laurestar.

“Our very own Akinwumi Akin Adesina has been reaffirmed as the President of the African Development Bank. Thank you toO to our supportive President @MBuhari who mobilised support for our own Adesina and why not! Adesina has been proven to be above board Congratulations,” Onochie said.

In July, the AfDB president was exonerated of allegations of favouritism and breach of code of conduct made by an unnamed whistleblower.

The probe had been conducted by the AfDB’s Bureau of Governors, after the United States Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin rejected the earlier findings by the bank’s ethics committee, vindicating Adesian, and called for a fresh inquiry.

Before taking over as the 8th president of the AfDB on 1st September 2015, Adesina served as Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2010 to 2015.

He obtained First Class Honours in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ife now Obafemi Awolowo University in 1981. In 1988, he received a PhD from Purdue University in Indiana, where he won the outstanding PhD thesis for his research work.

The former United Nations Secretary- General, Ban Ki Moon appointed him one of the 17 global leaders to spearhead the Millennium Development Goals in 2010.

He was awarded the 2017 World Food Prize
