Kenya court orders election board to grant petitioners contesting Kenyatta’s victory access to poll returns

Chief Justice David Maraga of the Supreme Court in Kenya has ordered the county’s election board to grant poll returns to petitioners contesting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election victory.

Justice Maraga who also said a copy of the voter register must be sent to the petitioners, made the ruling while addressing state prosecutors in court over the election matter.

Kenyatta was declared the winner of the last presidential poll rerun after garnering 98% in a one-way election, which is now being hotly, contested in court by a former lawmaker.

His closest rival Raila Odinga did not contest the repeat vote on Oct. 26 saying he doubted if it would be free and fair even as Kenya’s Supreme Court has until Nov. 14 to rule on election petitions and if it upholds the result, Kenyatta will be sworn in on Nov. 28.
