Kenyan opposition leader calls for resignation, prosecution of electoral body

A day after Kenya’s Supreme Court nullified the last staged general elections, opposition leader, Raila Odinga has called for the resignation and prosecution of some election commission officials.

In his reaction after leaving the Supreme Court, Odinga said; “It is now clear that the entire edifice of the (election) board is rotten. Clear evidence shows that the commission was taken over by criminals … they must face criminal prosecution,” he said, naming particular officials. “We are ready but cannot repeat the election with this commission.”

Yesterday, Uhuru Kenyatta, the President of Kenya said he disagrees with the decision of the Supreme Court to nullify the last staged general elections which saw him defeat his opponent Odinga by 54 percent of votes cast.

However, Kenyatta says he would respect the decision and urged citizens to do the same.

The decision by Kenya’s Supreme Court to nullify the election was reached after it was established that there were irregularities committed by the election board and an order to organise a new election in 60 days has also been issued.

The decision by the Supreme Court now hands renewed hope to Odinga who accused the ruling party of a “computer-generated presidency”, claiming that the election results were hacked and rigged in favour of Kenyatta.
