Kidnapped ex-minister Akwanga regains freedom

Emerging reports indicate that a former minister of Labour and Productivity, Hussaini Akwanga, who was recently abducted by gunmen has regained his freedom.

He was kidnapped at his farm on Wamba road in Akwanga area, the Nasarawa state.

The State Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Bello, confirmed his release on Thursday, but did not disclose if ransom was paid before his release.

But a family source confirmed to newsmen that a ransom was paid before the former minister was released. He however did not disclose how much was paid. The family was said to have claimed that the kidnappers were demanding for N8 million.

Earlier, Nasarawa State Police Command had announced that it arrested five suspects in connection with the kidnapping. The suspects were allegedly arrested following an intensive combing of a forest in the local government area by policemen.

The former minister served during the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo but was removed on December 4, 2003.
