MEDDLING ALLEGATIONS: Sirleaf’s behaviour constitutes sabotage, party says after expulsion

Liberia’s ruling Unity party has issued a statement after expelling outgoing president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and four other party officials, saying the behaviour of the expelled persons constitutes sabotage.

The statement was issued after Sirleaf and four others were accused of meddling in elections in which its candidate vice-president, Joseph Boakai was defeated by George Weah.

“The behaviour of the expelled persons … constitutes sabotage and undermined the existence of the party,” said the statement announcing the decision, which was taken by the party’s executive committee late on Saturday.

Sirleaf, who is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and Africa’s first elected woman president is accused of encouraging people to vote against Boakai.

The outgoing president however denies the party’s allegations that she held inappropriate private meetings with election magistrates before the 10 October vote to ensure her party’s candidate suffered a bruising defeat in the elections which eventually played out.

‎She gained popularity at home and abroad for helping to bring stability to her country after years of civil war.
