More opposition for concessioning as Railway workers oppose government

The planned concession of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, has been opposed by the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers, NURW.

The union, which appealed to the Federal Government to withhold its planned concession of the NRC, said there was no point defending the plan.

The move by the federal government to concession major aspects of the economy has led to stiff opposition from different quaters.

Recently, aviation workers in the country also kicked against the planned concessioning of four major airports in the country, vowing to resist it.

The railway workers position was made known by the Secretary General of the union, Segun Esan, adding that concession has simply reinforced underdevelopment, encourage massive unemployment, with massive corruption and social inequality.

“The policy has been consistently observed that assets of privatised enterprises have been deliberately undervalued.

“There has been no due process with high level collusion between the authorities and the companies that bought the privatised enterprises, leading to failure to pay over the appropriate monies to government coffers.

“The Bureau of Public Enterprise, BPE, has also failed to exercise its oversight functions on the privatisation process.”

According to Esan, the privatisation policy has been an abuse of due process fraught with corruption.

privatization has not benefited Nigeria in anyway. almost every parastatals , corporations and every other firms that have been privatized didn’t yield any effective result . so to me , government should embrace socialism , that is, they should control all means of production with effectiveness.

you lied. privatization has favoured us especially in the telecommunication sector.if we hadn’t privatized Nitel, Nigeria wouldn’t have met up with recent GSM technologies.

Sometimes, I’m not sure why people protest against a plan that would see the betterment of the country at large. Are there any personal interests that we should know of?

Nitel is not as bad has this before it was privatized, the privatization of NRC is long overdue. It is probably the worst means of transportation in Nigeria. It survival will boost trade in Nigeria.
