NEW YORK: Disgruntled Nigerian doctor kills colleague, wounds 6, shoots himself dead

An apparently disgruntled Nigerian-born doctor identified as Dr Henry Bello has attacked the Bronx Lebanon Hospital in the Bronx, New York,.

He opened fire with an assault rifle inside the building, killing one doctor (his former colleague) and wounding six other people before fatally shooting himself.

Reports say the assailant who was identified as a former employee of the New York City hospital was wearing a white lab coat and armed with an assault rifle during the attack which happened at 2:50 pm local time on Friday.

Speaking after the incident, Police Commissioner James O’Neill said at a news conference that one physician was shot to death in the course of the bloodshed, and six other people were injured, five seriously, including one who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

Continuing, O’Neil added that; “The body of a woman who was shot was found near his body,” O’Neill said before adding that five of the wounded were in serious condition and “fighting for their lives”.

“The hospital’s fire alarm system went off during the siege, apparently because the shooter tried to set himself on fire,” he said.

The police also revealed that after attacking people on the 16th and 17th floors of the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, the assailant was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound when security operatives swarmed the building and found his lifeless body.

Reports say Bello had received a limited permit to practice as an international medical graduate in order to gain experience so he could be fully licensed, but that permit expired a year ago.

Bello also had a pharmacy technician license from California before his death.
