Rohr names squad for Senegal, B/Faso friendlies, drops Mikel, Ighalo

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has named the squad for the coming friendly games with the Teranga Lions of Senegal and the Etalons of Burkina Faso in London later this month, and Chinese Super League duo of John Obi Mikel and Odion Ighalo were missing.

The captain of the team, Mikel, reportedly requested to be left out of the game to enable him settle down properly at his new club Tianjin Teda, particularly as the Chinese Super League will just be few weeks old at the time of the games.

Senior players included in the squad are Wolves’ goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, Trabzonspor midfielder Ogenyi Onazi and Leicester forward Ahmed Musa, according to an NFF release on Wednesday.

Manchester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho, Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi, Leicester star Wilfred Ndidi and Watford forward Isaac Success are also included in the squad.

The friendly ties are meant to prepare the Eagles for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019 qualifiers against S/Africa, as well as the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon.

Defenders: Leon Balogun (FSV Mainz 05, Germany); William Paul Ekong (KAA Gent, Belgium); Kenneth Omeruo (Alanyaspor FC, Turkey); Uche Henry Agbo (Granada FC, Spain); Abdullahi Shehu (Anorthosis Famagusta, Cyprus); Musa Muhammed (FC Zeljeznicar, Bosnia Herzegovina); Tyronne Ebuehi (ADO Den Haag, The Netherlands); Elderson Echiejile (Sporting Gijon, Spain); Kingsley Madu (Zulte Waregem, Belgium); Chidozie Awaziem (FC Porto, Portugal)

Midfielders: Ogenyi Onazi (Trabzonspor FC, Turkey); Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City, England); Oghenekaro Etebo (CD Feirense, Portugal); John Ogu (Hapoel Be’er Sheva, Israel)

The Super Eagles will be up against Senegal’s Teranga Lions on Thursday, 23 March, before taking on the Etalons of Burkina Faso four days later. Both matches will be played at The Hive, home ground of Barnet Football Club.
