Brazilian Senate gives go-ahead for Rousseff’s impeachment trial
After consultations and a debate among parliamentarians, the Senator tasked with reviewing President Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment process has recommended that she be put on trial for breaking budget laws.
A 21-member Senate impeachment committee, were presented with findings of Senator Antonio Anastasia and the committee is expected to vote overwhelmingly to transfer his recommendation to the full chamber in a decision that will bring the leftist leader one step closer to suspension from office.
Voting by the Senate to try Rousseff is expected to be staged on the 11th of May, at which point she will be automatically suspended, pending a trial that could last up to 180 days.
Vice President Michel Temer will take over as acting president and, if Rousseff is convicted, he would serve out the remainder of her term through 2018.
