RUSSIA: Putin re-elected in land slide win

Powerful Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been re-elected as the president of Russia after securing more than 76% of votes according to official results.

Putin who has led the country as either president or prime minister since 1999, will now rule Russia for the next six years after emerging winner of the election which witnessed the ban of main opposition leader, Alexei Navalny.

Addressing a rally in Moscow, Mr Putin said voters had “recognised the achievements of the last few years”.

Putin laughed off a question about running again in another six years, while speaking to newsmen after the election results were announced.

“What you are saying is a bit funny. Do you think that I will stay here until I’m 100 years old? No!” he said.

Putin’s win comes at a time when relationship between Russia and the West has hit an all time low especially with the US and Britain.

Moscow and London are currently neck deep in a diplomatic spat over the deadly nerve agent used to poison former spy Sergei Skripal and his 33-year-old daughter Yulia on British soil.

Russia is also fingered by the United States of America of having an influence in last presidential election which brought Donald Trump into power.
