Russia strikes global fear, unveils nuclear weapons it says can hit any part of the world

In its bid to send warning signals to its enemies, especially the West which it is at odds with in several conflicts – including Syria, Russia has unveiled new nuclear weapons.

According to President Vladimir Putin during the unveiling, the new nuclear weapons can hit any target around the globe with little chance of interception.

Putin unveiled the weapons which included a new intercontinental ballistic missile, a small nuclear warhead that could be attached to cruise missiles, underwater nuclear drones, supersonic arms, and a laser weapon during a conference where he spoke to legislators.

He also warned during the conference that an attack on Russia or any of its allies would elicit an immediate response from Moscow.

The announcement by Putin is coming days after the United States accused Russia of violating a rule to halt Syria’s use of chemical weapons after the war-torn country signed the international ban on chemical weapons in 2013.

According to Robert Wood, U.S. disarmament ambassador, Syria is violating the chemical weapons convention it signed in 2013, and that Moscow had “clearly been in violation” of its commitment to act as a “guarantor” of Syria’s behaviour.

The United States said it has evidence that Syria has used chlorine gas in attacks in recent weeks. Rescue workers and medics on the ground have described residents choking on fumes after air strikes.
