Sagay hammers APC again, says corruption in party may hinder Buhari getting second term

Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Anti-Corruption, Professor Itse Sagay, has said that the attitude of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership at condoning and hobnobbing with corrupt members may pose a serious problem for the party chances of getting another term in government.

“My view is that the party (APC) hierarchy and party leadership and not the government, the party is condoning corruption and they are hobnobbing with those corrupt party members and therefore setting a stage for the government to have serious problem when there is need to convince that it’s entitled to have another term in government,” he said.

Sagay stated this when he spoke on a Channels Television programme Sunday night where he commended the appointment of Justice Ayo Salami as chairman of the committee to monitor the corruption cases in courts.

According to Sagay, it will be difficult for the ruling APC to convince Nigerians that it is fighting corruption when many of its members are corrupt and the leadership of the party condones and hobnobs with them.

He therefore said that it was needful that such people indulging and condoning corruption in the party are totally removed even if it leads to a situation the party would be reduced to a smaller party in which everybody would have confidence in themselves rather than a big party where people do things contrary to what the party stands for.

He said, “If you have such mandate as a party and you have people in that party who are actively promoting corruption or they are subject of corruption and promoters of corruption, what they are doing is denying the party (the opportunity) of truly fighting corruption, then it is better to totally remove people of that nature from the party and form a smaller party in which everybody would have confidence in themselves rather than have a big party in which people are doing things contrary to what the party stands for” he stated.

Sagay latest attack came after APC leadership had advised him to only advice President Muhammadu Buhari as his appointee and not the party. The party had said that he Sagay was a “rogue elephant” and not APC members.
The party was then reacting to an earlier statement by Sagay where he described members and leaders of the party as “rogues”.
