Salah fires blank as Stoke hold Liverpool to boost survival hopes

Reigning African footballer of the Year, Mohamed Salah, missed a chance to break the record for most goals in a 38-game Premier League season as Stoke City earned a surprise draw at Liverpool.

Salah, who has scored 31 goals in the league this season, was hounded by defender Erik Pieters throughout the game as the Egyptian clipped wide his best chance to hit 32 in the 5th minute.

Stoke forced the Reds to a goalless draw, but they remain three points adrift of safety with just two games left this season.

That draw comes four days after Liverpool beat Roma 5-2 in the Champions League semi-final first leg, as the home side clearly lacked the attacking edge of last Tuesday.

Liverpool had a penalty appeal for handball against Pieters turned down late on as they missed the chance to go second but move four points clear of Tottenham in fourth.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will be traveling to Rome for the second-leg encounter of the Champions League semifinal scheduled for Wednesday.
