Scientist have finally designed a new type of battery that is believed to be able to hold up to five times more power than the ones that currently power phones, laptops and electric cars.

Lithium-air batteries have been tantalising to researchers for years because of their advantages over lithium-ion technology.

Now, researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory have created a version that works in a natural-air environment, and still works after a record-breaking 750 charge/discharge cycles.

“Our lithium-air battery design represents a revolution in the battery community,” said Amin Salehi-Khojin, co-author of the paper.

“This first demonstration of a true lithium-air battery is an important step toward what we call ‘beyond lithium-ion’ batteries, but we have more work to do in order to commercialise it.”

The new type of battery could provide major benefits for phone users who are tired of charging their inadequate batteries relentlessly, and also to industry as companies such as Tesla and Nissan among others experiment with cheaper and higher performing electric cars.
