Senate adjourns plenary over death of Reps member

New Senate bill seeks to tax Nigerians for GSM, cable TV services

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday adjourned plenary over the death of a member of the House of Representatives, Ja’afaru Ilyasu.

The deceased lawmaker, represented Magamu/Rijau federal constituency in Niger State and was a member of the House Committee on Appropriation.

He reportedly died on Monday morning at his Maitama, Abuja residence.

Upon resumption of plenary on Tuesday, the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi cited Order 43 and informed the lawmakers of the passing away of Ilyasu.

The Senate resolved to observe a minute silence and to suspend all items on the order paper to another legislative day.

After a minute silence was observed in honour of the deceased colleague, the Senate Leader moved that plenary be adjourned to another legislative day.

The Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe seconded and the plenary was adjourned to Wednesday, December 4, 2019.

It has been the tradition of both the Senate and House of Representatives that whenever any lawmaker dies, the plenary is adjourned till the next day as a mark of respect for the deceased colleague.
