Supreme Court fines Sheriff trying to stop Makarfi's appeal

The hope of the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for an early resolution of the crisis rocking the party, may be long in coming.

This is as its embattled former chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has insisted that all the conditions he put forward during a reconciliatory meeting must be carried out.

According to Sheriff, he is prepared to let go of his claims to the chairmanship of the party if he is allowed to nominate ten members to join the other ten that would be nominated by Senator Ahmed Makarfi to organize a fresh convention for the party.

He also insisted that the proposed new national convention must be held in Abuja, adding that failure to do this, he will  continue as chairman till 2018.

Sheriff stated this on Sunday when a delegation of Abia State chapter of the PDP from the 17 local governments of the state paid him a solidarity visit in Abuja.

The former Borno State governor explained that he decided to let go of the position of chairman because of the intervention by the governors of Taraba and Gombe states but the conditions that he gave must be met.

He also said the impunity which had brought the party to its present sorry state must be stopped.

He Said: “Proposals were put forward in Taraba and discussions cannot go forward until you handle it from the foundation. In Taraba, all issues put forward was for Makarfi Caretaker Committee to be dissolved.”

Sheriff’s conditions came on the heels of an appeal by his former strong supporter, Senator Buruji Kashamu yesterday, asking him to let go of his claim to the leadership of the party in the interest of the party and its supporters nationwide.
