Teenager Andreescu stuns Serena to win US Open title

Teenager Bianca Andreescu stunned Serena Williams in the final of the US Open as she won her first major title in the sport.

The defeat for Williams denied the 37-year-old American her quest for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.

Williams could not cope with the 19-year-old Canadian’s quality in a 6-3 7-5 defeat.

Andreescu, seeded 15th, lost a double break in the second set before taking her third match point, to become the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam.

To the disappointment of a stunned home crowd, Williams has now lost four successive major finals, losing to Naomi Osaka in last year’s US Open final.

“Bianca played an unbelievable match,” Williams told the crowd on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“I’m so proud and happy for you, it was incredible tennis out there.”

“I definitely had to overcome the crowd. I knew you guys wanted Serena to win,” a smiling Andreescu said in her on-court victory speech.

“Obviously it was expected for Serena to fight back, but I tried my best to block everything out. I’m glad how I managed to do that.”
