Tinubu files motion to prevent FBI, CIA from making records public (See papers)

President Bola Tinubu has submitted a motion to intervene in a case that aims to compel the release of his data by top U.S. security agencies.

President Tinubu in the injection file at the US Court for the Northern District of Columbia, contends that if his request is denied by the court, he would be “adversely affected”.

Aaron Greenspan, the proprietor of PlainSite, a website that promotes legal data transparency to combat corruption in public service, brought the action. Together with Nigerian journalist David Hundeyin, Greenspan had requested Tinubu’s papers under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in 2022.

They expect that the release of Tinubu’s papers will put to rest the questions surrounding his past and his participation in a drug case that resulted in the seizure of $460,000 in 1993.

In September, the FBI announced that it would comply with the FOIA request and release Tinubu’s records in batches of 500 pages starting in October. However, Tinubu has now filed a motion to block the release of his records.

In his application, Tinubu says that the defendants in the case have not “fully represented or protected” his interests and that he has a “direct interest” in the information requested.
